Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What's with the weird angles/spacing of the pickups?
A. There are several reasons for the pickup angles. First, the aesthetics; they make the guitar stand out from the crowd, and subsequently makes the player of a Dynamico stand out. Second is the comfort factor. Many guitarists anchor their ring or pinky finger on the bottom of the bridge pickup while playing, you'll find that the way the bridge pickup is angled makes for a far more comfortable place to anchor one's finger(s). Third, the sound is different. As a bridge pickup sounds different from a middle or neck pickup, when you change the angle of a pickup, it changes the sound as well. The neck pickup by itself sounds pretty much the same, but the bridge pickup gives a little more "twang" to the bass strings, and a little more smoothness to the treble strings, not too much different, but again enough to set it apart from other makers. The real difference is when you run the bridge and neck pickups together - the treble string's pole pieces are much closer than the pole pieces toward the bass strings, and give a new and nicely balanced tone, unique, but quite nice indeed.
Q. What kind of wood is used in Dynamico Guitars?
A. We prefer Honduran and Philippine mahogany for body woods and necks, we are also experimenting with black limba necks and swamp ash for bodies (see the Los Alamos prototype pics). We also utilize Walnut and various Maples for both the painted and natural tops. We offer as an no cost option a Bubinga headstock veneer that is stained black, and grainfilled with white grainfiller to give a sort of atomic era furniture look. Fretboards are standard in Indian rosewood, Ebony is also an option for a slight surcharge.
Q. Can you explain your "Mega-Tenon" neck please?
A. On all Dynamico guitars, the neck tenon runs as far down as the bridge, and then the guitar's top is glued on top of the body/neck, thereby sandwiching the neck between the top and back, not only creating a strong neck joint, but increasing the body/neck contact area compared to standard set neck considerably. you may snap a headstock off due to abuse, but the neck is NOT coming loose from the body.
Q. Do I have options on binding, inlays, pickups, tuning pegs, etc?
A. We are willing to work with your Dynamico dealer on most reasonable custom requests, but all Dynamicos come standard with the "Dynamico Domino" inlays in the fretboard, Kluson tuners, Tone Pros AVR-II bridges, Lindy Fralin pickups, Angela paper in foil capacitors, Dynamico tailpiece, and no binding (except Wrecktangle in "FiftyNine" trim). Any fretboard can be upgraded to having binding, but only the Wrecktangle and Los Alamos are available with binding on the top. All four models are available with headstock binding, and back of body binding.
Q. Any options on custom colors, crazy finishes etc?
A. The basic founding principle of Dynamico Guitars was "the brand that time forgot", i.e. we're pretty much full bore old school here. We love any and all things old, so if you think of colors that would be applicable to said old school, such as metalflake, candy colors, lace, Von Dutch-esque pinstriping etc. let's go! We have a rather extensive color library and prefer to shoot guitars in pre-68 automotive colors, and your old school "furniture" type finishes like blonde, 'burst, any number of different "stain" colors, etc.
Q. Most guitars I see that are painted an opaque color, the grain of the wood is never visible, i can see the grain faintly on Dynamico guitars. Is that a mistake?
A. Good question. We have a proprietary way we grain fill here at Dynamico, which only partially fills the grain, as grain filler is nothing more than plastic filler - really not conducive to creating good tone. By only partially filling the grain, it gives our guitars a slightly "grainy" appearance when examined very close up, but it is nothing at more than three feet away-- Also, by spraying nitrocellulose lacquer very very thin on these guitars conceals precious little visually or tonally. If absolutely glassy looking guitars is your thing, i can recommend any number of guitar companies that shoot polyester paint over top of thickly applied grainfiller that is pretty much impervious to anything short of gunfire.
Q. How much do they cost?
A. Dynamico Guitars start at $1799 with HSC. Binding, fancy maple tops, WCR humbuckers, Bigsbys, Grover Imperial tuners, non-standard finishes, etc. will all have extra costs. See THE OPTIONS PAGE for an exacting breakdown.
Q. What are my pickup options, as i am not a fan of P-90 pickups.
A. We also use WCR humbucking pickups here, and those are available in all models for an extra $275. We also offer DiMarzio DLX Plus soapbar humbucker if you like the look but not the sound of a single coil pickup for no additional charge. We've just also developed a pickup called "The Glasspack" in conjunction with Lindy Fralin that has the look of a P90, but the sound of a real hot Strat, which is available for no aditional charge. If you'd like something truly unusual or different, we can work with you within reason. Lindy Fralin builds some the world's finest P-90 pickups in many varieties of magnet types as well as over and under winding, and provide a wide palette of tones, all of which work well with Dynamico guitars.
Q. I played your prototype of "Swingin 66" in Austin and liked the thin neck, but i like the look of "Megami" better, any chance of combining the two?
A. We offer three basic neck dimensions - Fat, Regular, and Thin. Once a neck is cut from the basic neck jig, all necks at Dynamico are hand cut, filed, and sanded without the use of templates or gauges, all done by feel. No two Dynamico necks are the same, but all feel great. Neck heels are slightly different depending on which guitar they will eventually be married to, so keep that in mind.
Q. Any advantage to your aluminum/lucite tailpiece?
A. The lucite is a heavy dense plastic, and resonates unlike metal or wood, so it does provide tonal variation; have you ever heard a Ludwig Vistalite drumkit? Sounds like a drum, but not like other drums. It is one of many features that make a Dynamico a standout in the guitar world.
Q. Where can I buy a Dynamico?
A. We do not sell directly to the player here, except for the occasional demo guitar. Please check with www.tradarama.com, www.boutiqueguitarresource.com, www.customguitarboutique.com and www.elderly.com for starters, or contact us as to check which stores have current stock.
